io consulting (io) is pleased to advise that we have been awarded a concept select study by Gasunie New Energy, EBN, Port of Amsterdam and Tata Steel, collectively the Athos consortium, to support their review of options for CO2 transportation and storage from industrial CO2 emitters in the region of the Noordzeekanaal (North Sea Canal), Netherlands.

io will support an evaluation of transportation infrastructure required to gather the CO2 from emitters and deliver to offshore depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. This study will consider re-use of existing hydrocarbon infrastructure, the requirement for new pipelines, the pumping and compression requirements and potentially marine transportation of liquid CO2 to the offshore storage site(s).

Richard Dyson, io’s CEO said

“io is really pleased to have been selected by the Athos project for this important study and we are looking forward to building a long term working relationship with the project partners. CO2 Capture, Utilisation, Transport and Storage is a cornerstone of our Energy Transition Practice”

Arno Kakkenberg, Gasunie’s Athos Project Manager said

“we selected io as they offered the best combination of front end expertise, connectivity via their parents, deep domain technical know-how and project approach which will bring a robust set of solution scenarios for the Athos Project, which we can then use to move towards commercial viability of the project”.

about Athos

The Athos project has been initiated for the construction of a basic capture and transport infrastructure in the North Sea Canal area, to enable the usage or storage of CO2. Athos is an abbreviation for Amsterdam-IJmuiden CO2 Transport Hub & Offshore Storage, and is a joint initiative between Gasunie, EBN, Tata Steel and Port of Amsterdam.

The Netherlands has set clear climate targets, in line with the signing of the Paris Accord, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 49% (compared to 1990) by 2030. The capture, usage and storage of CO2 (CCUS) can significantly contribute to the reaching of these targets within a relatively short timeframe. It is, therefore, included as a prominent method for the industry in the Climate Agreement.

Gasunie, EBN, Tata Steel, and the Port of Amsterdam want to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions and help the Netherlands achieve the climate targets. The joint expertise of the companies offers a unique opportunity to realise a CCUS infrastructure: Tata Steel will capture CO2, Gasunie has experience with building infrastructure and transport, EBN has knowledge of geology & storage, and the Port of Amsterdam facilitates and coordinates companies in the area. Under the name Athos, the parties jointly investigate the technical, economic, legal and social feasibility of such an infrastructure.
